BaföG

The acronym BaföG refers to the assistance granted to students by the state, which is regulated by the German Federal Training Assistance Act (“Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz”). BAföG is split evenly into half-grant, half-loan. In other words, 50% of what students receive must be repaid. With just a few exceptions, any funding awarded depends on parental income.

Student loans

Some students arrange a student loan from a bank to fund their studies. In such cases, the banks don’t insist on the usual guarantees, and interest rates are usually low.
