Students and other university members can connect to the internet via WiFi & VPN or eduroam. You will also need the VPN connection to access the university drives or the library’s online resources from home. Visitors to the university can also use BayernWLAN (Bavaria WiFi) for cost-free, but also somewhat restricted, access.

Read on for further information and detailed instructions for establishing a connection.

eduroam (PC, Notebook, Mac)

What is eduroam?

eduroam is an initiative run by higher education and research institutions to provide students and staff with easy and free internet access via WiFi at all participating organisations.

Who can use it?

eduroam can be used any member of the university. The same goes for any guests and visitors whose institutions are part of the eduroam network.

What do I need to do?

Every device (notebook, tablet, smartphone) that you wish to connect to eduroam needs configuring once before you can log on. Select the “eduroam” SSID, and when you go to connect to the network you will be asked for your username and password. Use your usual university ID, but adding the suffix “@hs-kempten.de”.

BayernWLAN (Bavaria-WiFi)

The Free State of Bavaria set the target of installing a dense network of 20,000 cost-free BayernWLAN hotspts by the end of 2020, which would place it first among equals in Germany. The focus of this effort is primarily on local communities, major tourist spots, universities and public offices. The aim is to above all help rural communities establish a digital infrastructure.

So far, more than 23,000 BayernWLAN hotspots have already gone live, currently transmitting data in excess of 1.1 petabytes for approx. 9.3 million users. (Correct as at Oct. 2019)

BayernWLAN is accessible 24 hours a day and boasts state-of-the-art security, including a cutting-edge child-protection content filter. The handy, free BayernWLAN service is easy to use: The hotspots are all called “@BayernWLAN”. There’s no need to register, it’s password-free and requires no log-in.

BayernWLAN is also available at Kempten University of Applied Sciences. You can find more information about this service here.
