The Bavarian Academic Forum – BayWISS

The Bavarian Academic Forum – BayWISS is the cooperation platform of all 12 universities, 19 universities of applied sciences (HAWs) and 6 universities of arts in Bavaria as well as the Hochschule für Philosophie München (Munich School of Philosophy).

Bavaria is an exceptional scientific hub, offering outstanding conditions for young scientists, in particular, across its diverse higher education landscape. For years, consortial doctoral studies – which provide the secure legal basis for professors at universities of applied sciences to get involved – have been improving the flexibility and permeability of Bavaria’s higher education system.

With the expert forum for collaborative doctoral studies, the Bavarian Academic Forum – BayWISS reinforces the conditions for young researchers to study towards doctoral degrees and increases the permeability of our education system. Our “collaborative doctoral studies” model breaks down the obstacles that have stood in the way of graduates from universities of applied sciences and creates an attractive mentoring system supported by both kinds of universities for research into key issues of the future. Our fixed, clear structures strengthen the networking efforts between universities and all kinds of institutions, the culture of scientific collaboration – and thus research and innovation throughout Bavaria.

The BayWISS Joint Academic Partnerships ensure:

  • Professors at traditional and applied universities can co-supervise and evaluate doctoral theses on an equal footing
  • No additional obstacles discourage graduates from any kind of university
  • No distinction between PhDs according to academic background
  • Supervising UAS is cited in the PhD certificate
