Key info at a glance

To help you meet important deadlines and locate the forms you might need, we have pooled all the key information about re-enrolment, leave of absence and withdrawing from university (“exmatriculation”) and posted some useful links on this page. If you can’t find what you’re looking for here, please contact Academic Registry. However, we would ask you to read through the information provided here to start with.

Re-enrolment

Do you wish to continue studying next semester at Kempten University of Applied Sciences? Then please ensure that you re-enrol promptly during the specified re-enrolment period . You must also re-enrol on time for the coming semester if you are working on your final thesis this semester and/or awaiting corrections. It’s imperative that your re-enrol for the next semester in this case.

If it turns out during the following semester that you are deemed to have completed your studies (even retrospectively) during the previous one, this would void the need to have re-enrolled. In this case, the superfluous semester fee would be refunded to you within 8–10 days of us being notified, which you can do very easily online. Detailed instructions can be found in MeinCampus.

Scenario 1:
If the deadline for submitting your thesis is 17 August, and you can’t be certain that your mentor can finish your corrections by 30 September, then it’s vital that you re-enrol.
If you are retrospectively deemed to have successfully completed your studies during the previous semester (despite re-enrolling for the next one), you can also be given back the excess fee if you apply for a refund.

Scenario 2:
If you registered your final thesis on 20 February, with a submission deadline of 20 April, and you will need that entire period to produce your thesis, then you must re-enrol for the following semester.

The same applies in both cases:
If you don’t re-enrol (despite a reminder), you will be expelled from Kempten University of Applied Sciences without graduating.

For this reason we advise:
It’s better to re-enrol for an extra semester than risk being expelled without a degree!

When re-registering, the semester fee of 102 euros must be paid from winter semester 23/24. Please provide us with a valid SEPA single mandate or pay by credit card or PayPal via MeinCampus within the re-registration period (by March 1st for the summer semester or September 1st for the winter semester). You can find the procedure for this on this page under the menu item “How can I pay the semester fee and any additional service fee for non-EU-citizens that maybe?”.

Note:
According to information from the Augsburg Student Services Association, which is responsible for semester fees, this fee will increase from €72 to €85 starting in the summer semester of 2026. This means that a total of €115 (of which €30 is for the semester ticket) will be payable when re-registering for the summer semester of 2026, etc.

Semester fee / Service fee for non-EU nationals in English-language degree programs / Refund

On behalf of Augsburg Student Union, the university collects a semester fee costing € 72 from Winter Semester 23/24. The entire sum is passed on to Augsburg Student Union so that it can fulfil its remit (advisory service re. BAföG, subsidising canteens, investing in the construction of student halls of residence, etc.). Kempten UAS only handles this fee, as it doesn’t keep any of that money for itself.

Starting from the winter semester 2025/2026, a service fee of an additional €500 will be charged for all new students who are not from the EU and enroll in the programs Corporate Sustainability & Sustainable Finance, Electrical Engineering, Global Business Development, and International Engineering. Students who are already enrolled in these aforementioned programs before the winter semester 2025/2026 will be automatically exempt from this additional fee. They do not need to take any action. The amount will be due as part of the enrollment process, in addition to the semester fee, either in a lump sum or later during re-registration. The payment obligation applies exclusively to non-EU students in the four programs mentioned above. Of course, we have also considered a variety of exemption options. These include, among others:

  1. students from non-EU countries who have obtained a domestic university entrance qualification (e.g., ABI/FOS/BOS vocational school diploma, etc.),
  2. students who study with us as part of a cooperation agreement (e.g., students from one of our many partner universities outside the EU),
  3. individuals with a stable domestic connection according to§ 8 paragraphs 1 to 4 of the Bundesgesetz über individuelle Förderung der Ausbildung (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz - BAföG), or
  4. individuals who are treated equally to Germans or exempt from the fee collection due to further agreements, legal regulations, or international treaties.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

In addition, in response to students’ wishes, Winter Semester 2014/15 saw the launch of the semester ticket. The semester ticket costs an additional € 30 for a public transport pass per semester.

On September 1, the Bavarian state government decided to introduce a €38 public transport ticket for students. The Bavarian discount ticket will be valid from the winter semester 2023/24. As you already pay a semester fee with us, you can even purchase this ticket for the price of €33. Further information on this additional offer can also be found here.

Refund

Refunds of semester fees already paid are generally only possible if:

  •     you de-register before the start of the following semester or
  •     you are de-registered by the university.

Deadline in each case: 30.09. for re-registration for the winter semester or 14.03. for re-registration for the summer semester. After the start of the semester, a refund by the university is no longer possible.

The only exception is if you de-register no later than one month after the start of the semester (WS: 31.10. - SS 14.04.) and send us the following documents (e.g. by e-mail):

  •     Letter of admission for a degree program with admission restrictions
  •     Certificate of enrollment from the new university

You will then receive a full refund of the semester fee. A detailed instruction can be found under MeinCampus

How can I pay the semester fee and any additional service fee for non-EU-citizens that may be required?

The amount that students are required to pay each semester is therefore € 102 in total. You can find detailed instructions on paying this sum in MeinCampus .

In addition to the direct debit payment method, from 24.09.2024 you can also conveniently pay the semester fee (and of course any service fee to be paid/incurred for non-EU nationals on the English-language degree programs Corporate Sustainability & Sustainable Finance, Electrical Engineering, Global Business Development and International Engineering) with your Visa, Mastercard or PayPal account. How does that work? It's quite simple. We have provided you with step-by-step instructions here (separated for first-time students and returning students):

On 1 September 2023, the Bavarian state government decided to introduce a €29 ticket for public transportation for students as well, valid from Winter Semester 2023/24 on. Anyone who has already paid for a regional semester ticket with their semester fee can get this credited to the €29 price. The local sales partner responsible for Kempten UAS is mona, so please visit the mona website for instructions on purchasing the ticket.

Further information on this additional offer can also be found here.

Refunds

Once you have paid the semester fee, it can generally only be refunded if:

  • You officially withdraw from university before the start of the forthcoming semester, or
  • the university expels you (exmatriculation).

The deadline for re-enrolment is: 30 September for a winter semester or 14 March for a summer semester. Once a semester has started, the university can no longer issue a refund.

The only exception is if you officially withdraw from university within one month of the start of the semester, at the latest (winter semester: 31 Oct / summer semester 14 March). In this case, you will be refunded the semester fee in full. Detailed instructions can be found in MeinCampus – right here.

Help and questions

If you have any questions about the information provided on this page concerning the semester fee or refunds, of if you need any help, please get in touch with Academic Registry.

Leave of absence

You can apply to take leave of absence. Any periods spent on maternity leave or for childcare are counted separately from this. Main grounds for leave include:

  • Illness
  • Spending time abroad (including university collaboration agreements)
  • Military or civilian service
  • Employment
  • Pregnancy or childcare
  • Voluntary internship in Germany
  • Other reasons

Leave of absence to prepare for one or more examination(s) is no longer an option, as this is currently deemed unsuitable grounds for leave according to the specifications outlined in the Bavarian Higher Education Act.
Simply apply for leave of absence via MeinCampus by the last day before the start of the new semester. Click here for detailed instructions on the process. Leave of absence cannot be granted retrospectively for semesters that have already been completed. During leave of absence, your rights and duties as a student – except for the obligation to study ordinarily – remain unaffected. Whilst on leave of absence, you cannot undertake any first attempts at coursework or examinations (except during maternity or parental leave), whereas repeat attempts at any failed examinations must be made.

Please note: Deadlines for making repeat attempts at examinations are not extended!

Exmatriculation

You will automatically be exmatriculated officially at the end of the semester in which you are deemed to have successfully passed all the examinations required for your bachelor’s or master’s degree.

You can also de-register at your own request. If you decide to exmatriculate early - even in the case of graduation - please make sure you apply for this online in advance via MeinCampus. For database reasons, you must enter a date in the future, but you can indicate in the corresponding free text field that you would like the graduation date. Unfortunately, it is not possible to change the graduation date retroactively after the graduation documents have been received.

A detailed guide to the process can be found here. Exmatriculation will regrettably also be triggered if the examinations required on a bachelor’s or master’s degree programme are not passed in due course, or if a student fails to re-enrol for the coming semester.

Exmatriculation terminates membership of Kempten University of Applied Sciences.
