General information about applying

Who can apply?

Anyone who is due to start studying, is already enrolled, or is due to enrol for the subsequent semesters with the aim of earning a degree at Kempten University of Applied Sciences can apply.

I am currently studying at a different university. Can I apply nonetheless?

Yes, you can – but you must submit proof of enrolment at Kempten University of Applied Sciences when the scholarship is due to commence.

What sum does the scholarship award?

The Deutschlandstipendium bursary is worth 300 euros per month.

How long is the scholarship granted for?

Scholarships are usually awarded for one year (two semesters) in the first instance. In exceptional cases, awards for just half a year (one semester) can also be made.

How long will the scholarship continue for after I have taken my last examination?

The scholarship is valid for the period cited, but no longer than the end of the month in which you successfully complete your university education. This occurs when the final result is made known to this effect, i.e. the scholarship will expire no later than the end of the second month after that in which you completed the last examination for your degree programme.

Please inform us in good time of when you envisage finishing studying.
IMPORTANT: Please note that bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes are treated as separate entities, so the scholarship will also cease upon completion of final bachelor’s examinations!

Are any obligations attached to receiving a scholarship?

No, there aren’t any direct obligations. The formal awards ceremony for the Deutschlandstipendium includes a private reception with the sponsors. Your attendance at this event would be greatly appreciated to establish personal contact between you and your sponsor. Recipients of a scholarship are also invited to attend a networking meeting at Castle Vöhlin in Illertissen, including interesting workshops and the opportunity to meet the sponsors and other scholarship recipients studying at Kempten University of Applied Sciences, Neu-Ulm and Augsburg.

Can I apply more than once for a scholarship?

Yes, you can – by submitting a fresh application during the next round. The maximum duration of the scholarship depends on the standard length of the degree programme in question.

When does funding cease?

Funding ceases upon:

  • reaching the maximum duration according to the standard length of the degree programme, or
  • leaving Kempten University of Applied Sciences (e.g. changing universities), or
  • switching to a different subject at the university, or
  • completing final examinations, or
  • depletion of funding and an end to the Deutschlandstipendium

If my previous application was unsuccessful, can I re-apply?

Yes, you can.

Are my personal details passed on to the sponsor?

If you are selected for a Deutschlandstipendium scholarship, then the sponsor will be given your contact details.

Does the scholarship continue if you study abroad (spend a semester abroad) during the period covered by the award?

The scholarship will continue during a foreign semester, as long as you spend this time abroad during the award period. This also applies if you take absence of leave from the awarding university. If you study abroad on the ERASMUS programme, the Deutschlandstipendium scholarship will still be paid even if you receive a mobility allowance from the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst – DAAD); see BMBF FAQs.

Combining this scholarship with other funding

I receive a scholarship for talented students. Can I apply nonetheless?

Receiving two scholarship is basically not possible if one (e.g. for talented students) exceeds a monthly average of 30 euros. This will generally rule out recipients of book grants for talented students and anyone receiving the flat rate per semester on the Max Weber Programme. The double scholarship exclusion only applies to monetary funding. Idealistic support to promote talented students doesn’t count in this regard.

Will the scholarship affect any BAföG support that I am awarded?

No. Funding from BAföG and the Deutschlandstipendium are two complementary programmes that are not offset against each other.

Online applications

I haven’t received my school-leaving certificate (e.g. “Abitur”) yet – can I apply nonetheless?

Yes – and then please email a copy of the certificate to us as soon as you receive it.

I forgot to include something in my application form, or would like to edit it. How do I do this?

You can keep on adding to your online application and re-submitting by email it as you go along. We will only regard the latest version.

How can I find out whether my application has been submitted successfully?

You will automatically be sent confirmation of receipt to the email address that you have given us.

I am currently enrolled for my first semester of studies (bachelor’s/master’s programme), so I don’t yet have any evidence of my academic performance. What should I put for my average grade?

New undergraduate students should enter the average grade on their school-leaving certificate (eligibility for university) – new master’s students should enter the final grade attained for their bachelor’s degree.
