The aim of the mentoring programme at Kempten University of Applied Sciences is to provide female students in STEM subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences or technology) with professional guidance. Women are still under-represented on these degree programmes, which is why this programme aims to actively support their personal plans in life. In this way, Kempten University of Applied Sciences wishes to contribute towards developing an egalitarian society and help students venture down more wide-ranging individual paths.
The programme has been running in Kempten since 2008/2009 with affiliations throughout the state via the Bavarian Mentoring scheme by the State Conference of Commissioners for Women and Equal Opportunities at Bavarian Universities of Applied Sciences (LaKoF).
You can sign up between now and 10 October 2025 here: Bavarian Mentoring (matorixmatch.de)

Experienced women managers from prestigious local companies help students from the third semester on to tackle the challenges of studying and embarking upon a career. The Professional mentoring programme kicks of each October, lasting two years.
Who can take part?
Mentees: You must be studying in your third semester or above in one of the STEM faculties at Kempten University of Applied Sciences, have at least one year left until the end of your studies, and want a smooth transition into a successful professional life.
Mentor: You must have an engineering or computer science degree, hold a professional position, and be interested in helping young women with their personal development and planning their pathway in life. You should also be keen to make direct contact with fresh graduates and other professionals in your field via the mentoring network.
How does it work?
The programme kicks off in mid-October with a getting-to-know you event. This is followed by visits to companies, a range of seminars, coaching, regular meetings and group activities. There’s a feedback event at half-time and a final event for all participants.
Students in their first semester (junior mentees) are supported by those in higher semesters (junior mentors) studying the same subjects to help them find their feet at Kempten University of Applied Sciences quickly and easily. Junior mentors are on hand to advise on any personal, organisational or subject-related questions about studying. The Junior mentoring programme runs in small groups every year from October to June.
Who can take part?
Junior mentees: You must be in your first semester in one of the STEM faculties (electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science) at Kempten University of Applied Sciences and would like support from an experienced student in your field at the beginning of your studies.
Junior mentors: You must be studying in least your third semester in a STEM faculty at Kempten University of Applied Sciences and would like to actively support other students just starting out.
How does it work?
The Junior mentoring programme commences in mid-October with a kick-off event. After that, the students meet in small groups on a regular basis, go on visits to companies, and attend seminars and other events. It winds down at the end of the first semester.

Equal opportunities work at the university is firmly anchored at various structural levels. In addition to the legal requirements that call for Central and Local Commissioners for Equal Opportunities for Women in Science and the Arts (ZBGF) and the equal opportunities officers for academic support staff (GB), an office of Vice President for Internationalisation and Equality (VPIG) also exists at Kempten UAS. The Office for Equal Opportunities, Family Affairs and Diversity is responsible for the operational tasks involved in implementing programmes, measures and events relating to equality, family and diversity. The BGFD, led by the CCEO, is the central point of contact for all members of the university. The team at the BGFD is made up of a manager, the Officer for Equal Opportunities and Family Affairs, an Officer for Diversity, and a staff member responsible for issues relating to caring for relatives.
The schedule for equal opportunities work during the years ahead is outlined in the “Gender Equality Plan”.
The office of Central Commissioner for Equal Opportunities for Women in Science is a voting member of the Extended Executive Board of the University and an advisory member of Senate and the University Council. The Basic Ordinance of Kempten University of Applied Sciences (FHK/GO), dated 30 March 2007, specifies in Chapter Five (§22 ff.) the directives derived from Art. 4 BayHSchG regarding the position and tasks of the Central Commissioner for Equal Opportunities for Women in Science, these being:
Professor Veronika Schraut was confirmed in office for a further six semesters in April 2024. She has been the Central Commissioner for Equal Opportunities for Women in Science at Kempten University of Applied Sciences since 2017. Professor Barbara Seeberg was elected Deputy Commissioner for Equal Opportunities for Women in Science at Kempten University of Applied Sciences for the first time in April 2024 (also for six semesters).
The Equality Conference takes place twice per semester. All commissioners for equal opportunities for women are members of the Equality Conference. These conferences are currently chaired by the Vice President for Internationalisation and Equal Opportunities, Professor A. Kolb, and the Central Representative for Equal Opportunities for Women in Science, Professor V. Schraut.
The Equality Conference develops and adopts the Gender Equality Plan and monitors its implementation. The current Gender Equality Plan for Kempten University of Applied Sciences is valid until 2028 and meets the requirements for applications, as submitted to the Horizon Europe programme.
The Local Commissioners for Equal Opportunities for Women in Science and the Arts (LCEO) support the achievement of goals and the legal mandate to increase the proportion of women in the faculties. They are voting members of their faculty councils and are involved in every appointment procedure with voting rights. In addition to the legal stipulation in Art. 66 (2) HIG, this is also pledged in the university’s appointment guidelines. Kempten University of Applied Sciences manages the enormous workload presented to the LCEOs by the requirement for representation in every appointment procedure by means of a “pool solution”, i.e. cross-faculty deployment, which enables the workload associated with this activity to be distributed more evenly.
In Bavaria, a ministerial decree obliges the Local Commissioners for Equal Opportunities for Women in Science to not only be involved in every appointment procedure, but also be present at every meeting. The “pool solution” enables cross-faculty deployment of the LCEOs and an even distribution of teaching load reductions in this regard.
The aim is to reduce these commissioners’ workload, as some faculties have seen an extreme accumulation of appointment procedures, while others have very few procedures pending. Since attendance must be ensured and the right of representation can only be transferred within the same group of representatives, the LCEOs can thus represent one another and prevent delays in the process.
