Research Focus 3: Production

The Research Focus Production investigates different manufacturing technologies, such as forming, additive and foundry processes. In addition to process optimization, research is being conducted into robotics-based approaches to production systems and automation engineering. In general, the focus is trained on the potential for increasing resource efficiency and digitalization – using machine learning methods and digital twins for virtual plant and production planning. Materials engineering analyses and new sensory and optical measurement methods make it possible to scientifically evaluate processes. The areas listed below are anchored in this Research Focus:

  • Manufacturing and materials technology
  • Sensor technology and optical measuring processes
  • Machine learning and data-driven optimization
  • Robotics and automation engineering, digital twins

The researchers work at six institutes (Institute for Efficient Production Engineering, Institute for Data-optimised Manufacturing, Institute for Applied Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Institute for Machine Vision, Institute for Production and Informatics, Competence Center for Applied Research in Food and Packaging Technology) and other research-intensive laboratories.
