The amount of funding for studies or internships abroad on the Erasmus+ scheme varies according to the different costs of living in the host countries:
| Group 1 Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, UK | 600 euros per month*, plus travel expenses subsidy & any top-ups |
| Groups 2 and 3 Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey | 540 euros per month*, plus travel expenses subsidy & any top-ups |
*Important: A maximum funding period is stipulated each year, depending on the available budget and the number of students who will receive funding. During the academic year 2024/25, the maximum funding period was 4 months / 120 days per semester. Any stay exceeding this period will be unfunded, but retain Erasmus status (classified as “zero-grant period”). As we have received a record number of applications for the academic year 2025/26 – coinciding with the introduction of flat-rate travel expenses, thus increasing the total sum awarded for an Erasmus+ semester or internship abroad – it is possible that the maximum funding period might fall slightly below four months. This is likely to be decided in May 2025.

Inclusion and equal opportunities amongst potential grant recipients are considered central to the Erasmus+ scheme.
For this reason, the following target groups can apply – in addition to the “regular” Erasmus+ mobility allowance – for a “social top-up” at the present rate of € 250 per month :
Subsidy criteria for a social top-up and further info
Even if you meet more than one of the criteria (e.g. first person to study in the family and in employment), you can only qualify for a single social top-up (i.e. € 250 per month) payment.
*Students with a disability or chronic illness and students with (a) child/ren can also apply for “real costs” to cover any actual additional costs incurred – up to 15,000 euros – per semester abroad. Please contact the International Office early on to ensure that you submit any such application far enough in advance!
The Erasmus+ programme supports sustainable travel to or from your host country with a higher subsidy for travel expenses.
In addition, you can apply for up to 6 travel days as an additional qualifying period for funding .
If you use low-emission transport – such as buses, trains or car-sharing (2 or more people) – for most of your return journey, you can apply for the Green travel subsidy via the Mobility Online portal before setting off, and also submit the Declaration of honour on green travel to the International Office.
If a virtual component is combined with a short stay at the partner university, then an on-site stay lasting 5–30 days can be funded. The online studies can completed either before or after the on-site stay and must be worth 3 ECTS in total. The following funding applies to mobile participants on blended intensive programmes (BIP).
| Duration | Funding | |
| Days 5–14 | € 79 per day plus travel expenses subsidy | |
| Days 15–30 | € 56 per day plus travel expenses subsidy |
Important: The length of stay that is funded generally equates to the number of days spent studying at the partner university, but this might be capped if we don’t have sufficient Eramus+ funds to cover this!

Mobility that is exercised purely virtually – i.e. without physically attending the partner university – doesn’t qualify for Erasmus+ funding. However, virtual students are awarded Erasmus+ status (incl. exemption from tuition fees at the partner university) and offered online language support (OLS).
