  4. Institute for Energy and Propulsion Technologies (IEAT)
  5. Labs

The IEAT has a total of seven laboratories at its disposal, run by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Here is the full list, for further information.

Laboratory for Energy Technology

Scientific contact:

Professor Jost Braun, Dr.-Ing.
Tel. +49 (0)831 2523-203

Laboratory for Vehicle Drives

The Laboratory for Vehicle Drives combines expertise in conventional, hybrid and electric vehicles for use in teaching and research.

Various drive concepts are investigated, compared and evaluated in driving/test bench trials and using simulation models – examining various drive units, drive trains, emission behaviour and energy balances. Aspects of energy generation, various means of storage and conversion are considered with regard to economic efficiency. The laboratory facilities are also available for working on external contracts.

Laboratory for Process Simulation

The Laboratory for Process Simulation is used for teaching and research. The particular areas of expertise include stationary and transient simulation of energy and process engineering processes, calculating thermal and fluid flow for components, calculating material data and forecasting loads using state-of-the-art machine learning methods.

Laboratory for Control Engineering and Vehicle Systems

The Laboratory for Control Engineering and Vehicle Systems is used to work on applied research and development topics in the automotive and automation sectors. The laboratory was founded in 2016 for the purpose of testing components, but its portfolio now extends to complex test benches for complete systems. In addition to research, the laboratory is also used for teaching purposes.

Laboratory for Renewable Energies

The Laboratory for Renewable Energies addresses current issues in renewable energy technology, particularly in the fields of solar heat generation and the use of biomass for energy.

Scientific contact:

Professor Wolfgang Mayer, Dr.-Ing.
Tel. +49 (0)831-2523-9528

Laboratory for Smart Energy Systems

The aim of the research group at the Laboratory for Smart Energy Systems is to utilise modern optimisation techniques and machine learning methods to achieve optimal design and operation of the battery storage components in energy systems. Fields of research include developing sustainable and efficient storage systems, creating digital twin models of battery systems, optimising AI-based storage control and the design and control of storage systems in smart grids, and forecasting the ageing behaviour of lithium-ion batteries and battery systems.
