Applying for a master’s degree programme

• with a grade of at least 2.5/“good”
• Except: Industrial Engineering – Mechanical Engineering: max. 3.0
• Except: Technical Innovation and Product Management (no minimum grade stipulated – a selection process follows to decide upon admissions)

If you apply before completing your first degree:

• If your bachelor’s degree is worth 210 ECTS credit points: Evidence of at least 180 ECTS credit points
• If your bachelor’s degree is worth 180 ECTS credit points: Evidence of at least 150 ECTS credit points

Exceptions

• If your bachelor’s degree is worth 210 ECTS credit points: Evidence of at least 170 ECTS credit points
• If your bachelor’s degree is worth 180 ECTS credit points: Evidence of at least 140 ECTS credit points

If you are already a student at our university, you don’t need to submit this evidence.

Are you currently still completing your bachelor’s degree programme (e.g. you are waiting for corrections to your bachelor’s thesis), but would already like to apply to study with us? That’s no problem! As long as you can submit your degree certificate to us within one year of enrolment.

Did you qualify for admission to university abroad?

• Verification and validation of your certificate by uni-assist. As of Summer Semester 2025, we only accept preliminary review documentation (“VPD”) that has been issued specifically for Kempten University of Applied Sciences. VPDs issued for other universities (of applied sciences) cannot be used for this purpose. Applicants for the degree programme in Electrical Engineering don’t need to get their degree certificate verified by uni-assist.
• Evidence of language proficiency

The requirements regarding language proficiency can be found in the international section.

• A first degree in one of the following areas: mechatronics, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering – electrical engineering, industrial engineering for mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, packaging technology
• If your bachelor’s degree is worth 180 ECTS (without a practical semester): Evidence of 20 weeks working in mechatronics / completing a practical semester: earn a further 30 ECTS credit points. Graduates with a bachelor's degree worth 180 CP (without practical semester) must present proof of a continuous practical activity  lasting at least 20 weeks in a professional field relating to a bachelor’s degree in mechatronics within one year of commencing their studies, at the latest.
• Graduates with a bachelor’s degree worth 180 CP (with practical semester) earned from a 6-semester degree programme must complete the missing coursework and examinations totalling 30 CP within one year of starting the degree programme, at the latest. Decisions regarding the fulfilment of requirements, admissions and type and scope of subsequent studies and examinations are made by the Examinations Board in liaison with the degree programme coordinator.

• A economics/business sciences degree, other social sciences, engineering or natural sciences degree, or an equivalent German “Diplom” or bachelor’s degree worth at least 210 ECTS Credit Points Of these, at least 15 CP must have been acquired in basic quantitative-methodological principles (mathematics, statistics, business informatics) If these methodological skills are lacking, they must be demonstrated within one year of commencing the degree programme, at the latest.
• Final grade at least 2.5 (“good”)
• Evidence of proficiency in English, minimum level B2 (General university entrance certificate from a German grammar school or a vocational or technical college, or a TOEFL language certificate with at least 75.0 points, or an IELTS test certificate with least 5.5 points).
  Proof is deemed to have been provided for all graduates of a degree programme in which at least 50% of the CP acquired are attributable to English-language modules.
• Proficiency in German, minimum level B1 within the first year of study
  Proof is deemed to have been provided for all graduates of a degree programme in which at least 30% of the Credit Points acquired are attributable to German-language modules. Proof is also accepted in the form of a general university entrance certificate from a German grammar school or a vocational or technical college.
• Curriculum vitae (bullet-point format)
• A copy of the degree certificate from the first degree programme in accordance with § 4 para. 1 no. 1 of the Programme and Examination Regulations, with a German translation if necessary
• An essay of approximately 2,000 characters in English in which the applicant explores an academic question closely related to corporate sustainability or sustainable finance

• Evidence of English equivalent to at least level B2 (e.g. higher secondary education certificate from a German grammar school, ABI/FOS/BOS certificate, Unicert language certificate, BEC Vantage, telc)
• German to at least level A1 within the first year of study
• Evidence of at least 3 months spent in a foreign-language country abroad, not as a tourist
• Essay (approx. 2,000 characters in English engaging with a scientific question on any topic from your degree subject in relation to at least one of the modules 1–4 or 8–11 on the degree programme that you wish to study)

• Degree in economics/business sciences or from an economics-focused programme (including at least 25 ECTS in quantitative modules – mathematics, statistics, operations research or logistics)
• If your bachelor’s degree is worth 180 ECTS (without a practical semester): Evidence of 20 weeks’ work experience (at least 30 ECTS) / complete a practical semester to gain a further 30 ECTS credit points

• A first degree in a non-business/economics-related subject in the field of social or health care. To count as “non-economic”, a degree programme must have included no more than 30 Credit Points from modules focusing on business administration, economics or management – For example, ergotherapy, nutritional sciences, educational sciences, geriatric therapy, rehabilitation and care, gerontology, gerontological nursing and therapy, health sciences, human medicine, teaching, nursing, care sciences, pharmacy, physiotherapy, psychology, social work, social education or sports sciences.
  If you have a degree in a comparable subject not cited here, or are unsure whether your degree counts as “non-economic”, you can request that the Examinations Board for the Faculty of Social and Health Studies check and authorise it, if deemed suitable.
• If your bachelor’s degree is worth 180 ECTS credit points: Evidence of practical occupation in social or health care for at least 20 weeks (full-time) since acquiring first professional entry-level degree; alternatively, this can be performed within the first year of studying.

You can also apply before completing your degree programme, as long as you can demonstrate that you have already earned at least 170 ECTS Credit Points (from 210 ECTS in total) / 140 ECTS Credit Points (from 180 ECTS in total). The remaining ECTS Credit Points must be earned within one year of enrolling; otherwise enrolment will be annulled retrospectively.

• A bachelor’s degree or German “Diplom” in industrial engineering, or another field of engineering, or a comparable discipline with sufficient technical focus from a German or foreign university worth at least 210 Credit Points (CP) according to the European Credit Transfer System  (ECTS) (final grade at least 2.5 = “good”), or an equivalent formal qualification. Sufficient technical focus equates to at least 30 Credit Points in  STEM subjects (maths, computer science, natural sciences). Applicants with a degree in  a non-technically focused discipline can also be admitted if they have earned at least 30 Credit Points in STEM subjects   (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences or technology), or have gained sufficient  professional experience in technical product management. The selection committee decides, in accordance with Appendix 2   of the aptitude assessment procedure, whether the technical expertise suffices for the master’s degree programme. Of the  30 Credit Points in STEM subjects, at least 20 must have been earned before starting to study on the master’s degree programme. The remaining 10 Credit Points can be earned during the two theory-based semesters of study at Kempten University of Applied Sciences. The selection committee is also responsible for deciding which modules in STEM subjects  can be accepted or must be caught up.

Applicants to the master’s degree programme in Technical Innovation and Product Management must both hold adequate qualifications for a postgraduate degree  and also complete an aptitude test to ascertain their suitability for advanced studies in this field. The first step in this two-stage application process is to submit the documents stipulated in the programme and examination regulations. These include:

• A personal statement written in German (approx. 2,500 characters), stating your reasons for applying to study on this course.
• Your self-composed curriculum vitae, highlighting aspects relevant to the selection criteria cited below.

Two members of a selection panel appointed by the faculty will evaluate your application documents (personal statement and curriculum vitae) according to the following criteria:

• Extent of knowledge and skills acquired during first degree studies that relate to the modules on the master’s degree programme.
• Extent of skills and knowledge acquired beyond studies that relate to the training content for technical product management.
• Extent of experience in managing projects, which can also lie in social or political spheres.

This evaluation will form the basis for pre-selecting generally suitable candidates. Applicants who pass pre-selection are invited to interview, where necessary. If suitability can be ascertained in the first stage of the process, you will already be notified of your acceptance on the degree programme at this point.

Applicants might be asked to attend a second-stage, structured interview lasting approx. 30 minutes under test conditions. The interview is conducted by at least two members of the selection panel to clarify the following issues:

• Does the candidate have adequate underlying knowledge of the economic and technological subject matter related to the modules on the master’s programme?
• Is the candidate able to analyse typical economic/technical issues?
• Does the candidate possess skills in the field of technical innovation and product management?
• Can the candidate present potential solutions to problems in the field of technical innovation and product management in a logical and factually correct manner?

Candidates’ performance will be evaluated by at least two members of the selection panel, who will both have to deem them suitable. The procedure is specified in detail in the Programme and Examination Regulations (“SPO”) for the master’s degree programme in Technical Innovation and  Product Management.
